Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree required.
  • 3 to 5 years of applicable experience in a laboratory animal research setting.
  • AALAS certified at Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (or obtained within 6 months of hire).

Preferred experience, certification and training:

  • Laboratory animal care and medicine.
  • AALAS certified at Laboratory Animal Technician level.
  • Strong interest in laboratory animal research.

  • Flexibility, willingness to take on new challenges
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Foster and promote a positive image and professional appearance
  • Knowledge of regulations (Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animal Medicine, and the PHS Policy), accreditation standards, SOP writing and revision
  • Demonstration of teaching and training skills preferred, observant, detail oriented, communicate effectively with a diverse group of personnel, display tact, maturity and consideration
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Machines/Equipment/Software:

  • Calculator, Computer peripheral equipment, Fax, Personal computer.
  • MS Windows, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint, MS Word and Excel preferred, Mosaic Vivarium system.

Working / Environmental Conditions:

  • Occasional pressure due to deadline requirements
  • Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries
  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours
  • Required availability by phone or pager at defined times
  • Subject to regularly changing priorities and work assignments
  • Tobacco-free environment.
