Position Summary:


The Internal Communications Senior Manager provides strategic planning and implementation of internal (90%) and external (10%) communications in support of City of Hope’s Campus Plan initiative – a multi-year initiative that seeks to create a more advanced and cohesive campus environment to extend our local and global leadership in research and patient care. The primary responsibility will be to design and assist in the execution of internal and external communications strategies that educate key stakeholders on the impact of the Campus plan initiative, as well as generate excitement for the enhancements being made to City of Hope’s campus.


The Senior Manager will work collaboratively with program leads outside of her/his department including Event Services, Executive Communications, Media Relations, and the Content Team.  She/he will be responsible for ensuring all campus leadership meetings, employee communications and other key communications channels proactively update the organization on progress with the Campus plan and upcoming impacts key stakeholders should be aware of.


Key Responsibilities include:

  • Create compelling, creative and integrated internal communications campaigns from beginning to end that have impact and leverage storytelling content that support and advance Campus Plan objectives and mitigate impact of changes to Campus on key internal stakeholders (staff and patients).

  • Partner with strategic communications leadership, as well as media specialists and content team, to proactively determine external channel strategy, as appropriate. Support the development of creative, integrated communications content that is distributed on appropriate channels in traditional, social and digital media.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders across the organization to become a trusted partner. Provide the methods and guidance to enable informed decision-making for internal external communication strategies.

  • Define and measure success metrics and monitor change progress and communication effectiveness.


Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:   

  • B.A. in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing or related field.

  • 8+ years relevant experience in a Corporate Communications capacity with relevant experience in internal and external communications, with proven track record developing and executing creative communications strategies for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of different channels across the traditional, social and digital media spectrum a must.

  • City of Hope has a high standard of editorial integrity; excellent writing and editing skills are a must as well as good oral presentation skills.

  • Good working knowledge of all aspects of internal communications, public relations, media relations, social media, advertising, marketing, event marketing and business development.

  • Superb interpersonal and client service skills with ability to work with managers and leadership at the highest levels within City of Hope.

  • Ability to quickly grasp information across a variety of disciplines, translate complex ideas and create clear, easy to understand communications to a wide array of audiences.

  • Able to influence “up and down” to achieve project objectives (i.e., soliciting and reconciling feedback from multiple sources).

  • Skilled at seeing both the big picture and details to find innovation content across the enterprise.

  • Acute business acumen and understanding of organizational issues and challenges.

  • Proven project management skills (planning and time management) and excellent organizational skills.

  • Computer savvy, experience with the following software: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Web editing/content management systems.

Preferred education, experience and skills:

  • Healthcare communications experience.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or nonprofit hospital.

  • Experience collaborating with teams in a professional services or large matrix company.

  • Experience with large scale reputation campaigns.
